Birthday Greetings to:

Congratulations
Well done to Levi Heffernan and Neight Fraser who competed at the NZ Juniors Mako (South Island) swim meet in Invercargill last weekend. Theses boys had to qualify for this national swim meet and competed against swimmers from throughout the South Island.  It is the biggest swim meet for 9 to 12 year old swimmers. At the same time there were 3 other swim meets happening in the North Island.
Levi competed in the U12 year age group and swam in 9 races and got personal bests in 8 of them while getting first in 3 freestyle races, second in 50 fly and individual medley and got 2 fourths and a fifth.  He also broke 3 Otago swimming records in his age group.
Neight competed in the U11 year age group and swam in 11 races and got personal bests in all his races and got a third in his 200 individual medley.  Both Levi and Neight swam for the Oamaru Club relay team against all other swim clubs in the south island including the bigger cities and got 1st in both freestyle and medley relays.   The Oamaru Club came away with the most points due to their swimmers performing exceptionally well.  Congratulations to you both.
Cricket Cup Game
On Wednesday our senior cricket team competed in the NZ National Cup game where intermediate schools throughout North Otago and Otago played cricket against other schools in a knock out 20/20 competition.  If you win the first game, you play the winners of the other game and if you won that one you played against a Dunedin based team etc. Liam Cameron and Cody Marshall recount the day.
"In the first game we versed Waitaki Valley School and St Joseph's batted the first innings. The opening batters were Liam Cameron and Cody Marshall. After the first innings our team scored 196 runs and we ended up winning the game by more than 100 runs.  Top scorers were 61 runs by Cody and 23 by Liam.  Good bowling by Eli Herbst and Hamish Fowler.
In the second game we batted first against Oamaru Intermediate and we managed to get 116 runs.  Even though we got lots of runs, OIS pulled through and got our total in the 11th over.  Top score was 46 by Liam.
A big thank you to our parents/caregivers Mr Hogan, Mr Jones, Mr Cameron and Mr Robinson for helping transport and look after us today and also to North Otago Cricket for organising the day.

Swimming
Senior swimming sports
We are holding our annual senior swimming sports on Wednesday 6th March for Yrs 4-8 at the Waitaki Aquatic Centre. Our first race will be at 9.30 am and will be finished by 12.30 pm.

In order to make these sports happen we would like 12 helpers for time keeping as we already have 6 students from St Kevin’s College.  You are guaranteed a seat if you time keep and good viewing!!   If you are interested in timekeeping, please see me at school or email sport@stjoseph.school.nz  (You will be shown how to time keep beforehand at the pool)

We also would like a parent with a trailer or a big car with fold down seats who can help transport chairs down to the pool on the day.  If you can help, please contact me.

The sports will involve demonstration races for the children who can swim half a length in both/or freestyle and backstroke as well as non-competitive and competitive events and relays.

We have entered the children in races they are confident in with both the swimming instructors and sports coordinator been looking at them during their swimming lessons. If you want to ensure that your children are in the races you feel they should be, please contact me.
A full notice outlining the full sports will be in next week’s newsletter. Thanks Paula Brien.

Junior Swimming
Please return the swim notice by Monday as the children need to be sorted into their swim groups.  Please let Mrs Brien know if you help with walking to and from the pool.

Swimming lessons
It is great to see the improvement in the children with their swimming lessons, whether it is perfecting a stroke technique, going from half length to full length swimming or swimming without a board.  Some photos from the first week (sorry they missed last week's newsletter).
