1. Principal's News Week 4 Term 1 2019

Dominican Choir
Our Dominican Choir is taking a slightly different approach this year and some of our intermediate students who are in the choir are also participating in instrumental groups.  This has just started and it will be interesting to see how it pans out over the year.

A big than you to Hana our Head Girl Special Character who has volunteered to lead and teach the ukelele group:

Also a big thank you to Cooper, Paddy, Lisiate, Sami, Riley and Liam who gave up their own time on Monday after school to provide a cultural welcome to teachers from other North Otago schools participating in our Whitestone Kahui Ako (Community of Learning) at St Joseph's School.

Notices

Our office staff are spending a lot of time following up on fitting people into goal setting interview times, the start of year forms that need filling in and sports notices.   Please help them by responding promptly.

Commitment Mass
Our children starting this year's sacramental program will be making their commitment to the program at this Sunday's mass at 9.30 am at the Basilica.  It would be great to see members of our community there to support them.

God Bless and Aroha

St Francis de Sales - Bishop of Geneva

“Everyone of us needs half an hour of prayer each day except when we are busy - then we need an hour.”
(St Francis de Sales)

Currently we are in the first and much smaller block of Ordinary Time in the Liturgical year.  In Ordinary Time the priest wears Green vestments. This first block of Ordinary Time starts after the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord (This year it was Sunday 13 January) and goes until Shrove Tuesday (the day before Ash Wednesday - next week).  Ordinary time will start again after Pentecost, which is roughly 50 days after Easter Sunday and will continue all the way until the Feast of Christ the King on November 24th, after which Advent will start.  Out of a total of 52 weeks in the year, 34 of them are in Ordinary Time.
God Bless

1. Principal's News Week 3, Term 1 2019

Baptism
Last Year's Confirmation Group
Baptism is the first of the sacraments.  The sacraments are outward symbols of the grace we receive from God at important parts of our life journey.  Baptism is an outward sign of an inward desire to put one's faith in Jesus Christ.

We are just about to begin our sacramental program starting with our Commitment Mass on Sunday 3 March.  This will be the beginning of some children's journey through the sacraments of Reconciliation, Confirmation and First Communion in 2019.

I have sent invitation letters to families of children who are not Baptised.  Fr Wayne and I will meet with any family who would like to explore Baptism for their child which would then include them in the sacramental program for 2019.  Please contact me if you would like to be included.

Pasifika Conference
Tua Misiloi attended the Pasifika Conference in Wellington over the last weekend.  She represented St Joseph's and has brought back a lot of good ideas about inclusion which will help our Pasifika community and all of us.  For instance, one of the things she has told me so far is that in our education we need to think not just about ourselves as individuals but to know that the strength of our community, our family and our ancestors are behind us and that we are NOT ALONE.  Also to allow our thinking to be broad and know our children can do anything and there are many options.

A quote:
"Education or People provide place of belonging for our Pasifika Students or ALL students. It is not about ME and I it is all about WE. Honour the pioneers /people behind us- our elders/family and community. We are accountable for all our people/school/community. We are not the other, we are connected to our land and our ancestors" Hon Luamanuvao Dame Winnie Laban

Enviroschools
Kiwi Class's Litter Collage
It's been really difficult but we have refrained from picking rubbish up for the first couple of weeks of term.  This week Mrs McRae's class collected up the litter and they are going to make a display to show just how much and what type of litter we are dropping around school.

Mrs McRae and our year 8 environment leader, Molly Mae have asked children to apply to be on an Enviroschools committee and applications close on Friday.  More news about this next week.

Board News

We have an upcoming board election in 2019.  Our Board has 7 parent representatives and 4 places for proprietor's (Bishop's) representatives.  It has been very difficult over the last few years to keep a stable board of 7 parents.  At our next meeting we are taking steps to legally reduce the number of parent representative places to 5 or 6 places (most boards have 5), to maintain a stable board.  This decision will be made at our meeting on March 19th.  As all our board meetings, this meeting is open to the public.  In the meantime we encourage parents to think about whether they would like to step up to be a Board member and consider being nominated for the elections later in the year.

Swimming
Make a diary date for senior swimming sports on Wednesday 6 March.  We will need a good number of parent helpers.  Please let Paula know if you can help.
Ash Wednesday
We will hold a whole school liturgy for Ash Wednesday at 2.15pm on Wednesday 6 March in the Basilica, parents are warmly welcomed to join us.

Goal setting
Its important for our students that all families attend goal setting meetings.  Our office staff will be ringing families who have not set up meetings.  Please save their time and book your meeting this week.  It's important that your child attends the meeting too.

Wednesday 27 February or Monday 4 March.
Book your time at: School Interviews using the code q46qy.

2 Special Character 2019 Week 3

Friday 22 February is a Feast Day called “The Chair of Saint Peter”.  This Feast is a celebration of the unity of the Church founded by St Peter the Apostle.  Jesus told Peter “And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:18).  As Catholics, we believe that the Holy Spirit breathes in the Church through the ministry of the bishops in union with the Pope.  It has already lasted longer than any other human organisation or empire.   A couple of well known hymns are very suitable for this feast day; firstly, “The Church’s One Foundation” and “Faith of our Fathers”.

February 22 is also the anniversary of a massive Earthquake in Christchurch in which many people died.  May they rest in peace.

QUOTE FOR THE WEEK
Altar Servers
Saturday 23rd February - Mariah Cunningham, Annalise Kilgour and Sam Asi
Sunday 24th February - Lilly Kelcher and Alexie Phillips

Birthday Greetings to:
Paige Strachan, Jack O'Neill, Jack Phillips and Reynaldo Marasigan

Congratulations
Well done to Levi Heffernan and Neight Fraser who competed at the NZ Juniors Mako (South Island) swim meet in Invercargill last weekend. Theses boys had to qualify for this national swim meet and competed against swimmers from throughout the South Island.  It is the biggest swim meet for 9 to 12 year old swimmers. At the same time there were 3 other swim meets happening in the North Island.
Levi competed in the U12 year age group and swam in 9 races and got personal bests in 8 of them while getting first in 3 freestyle races, second in 50 fly and individual medley and got 2 fourths and a fifth.  He also broke 3 Otago swimming records in his age group.
Neight competed in the U11 year age group and swam in 11 races and got personal bests in all his races and got a third in his 200 individual medley.  Both Levi and Neight swam for the Oamaru Club relay team against all other swim clubs in the south island including the bigger cities and got 1st in both freestyle and medley relays.   The Oamaru Club came away with the most points due to their swimmers performing exceptionally well.  Congratulations to you both.
Cricket Cup Game
On Wednesday our senior cricket team competed in the NZ National Cup game where intermediate schools throughout North Otago and Otago played cricket against other schools in a knock out 20/20 competition.  If you win the first game, you play the winners of the other game and if you won that one you played against a Dunedin based team etc. Liam Cameron and Cody Marshall recount the day.
"In the first game we versed Waitaki Valley School and St Joseph's batted the first innings. The opening batters were Liam Cameron and Cody Marshall. After the first innings our team scored 196 runs and we ended up winning the game by more than 100 runs.  Top scorers were 61 runs by Cody and 23 by Liam.  Good bowling by Eli Herbst and Hamish Fowler.
In the second game we batted first against Oamaru Intermediate and we managed to get 116 runs.  Even though we got lots of runs, OIS pulled through and got our total in the 11th over.  Top score was 46 by Liam.
A big thank you to our parents/caregivers Mr Hogan, Mr Jones, Mr Cameron and Mr Robinson for helping transport and look after us today and also to North Otago Cricket for organising the day.
