Oamaru History Trip
The senior school had an inspiring trip yesterday. They visited the museum, the Forrester Gallery and did a learning walk in the old precinct. Our inquiry at the moment is not just about finding out about history but about how people curate history, what things we decide to record, how we record them and how we share them. The museum was particularly interesting as it has recently been upgraded and these were the sort of questions the museum had to consider. At the Forrester Gallery the children reflected on what aspects of St Joseph's they would save, and how they would save them so that we could show people in the future what is important about who we are now. Interestingly, the children suggested that if the junior school was pulled down (that's not the plan as far as I know) that some of the red bricks would be incorporated into a new building.
By chance a visitor came today who went to St Joseph's in 1967. She was really impressed that our students were able to tell her aspects of our school's history. I am taking groups from classes over to look at the parish archives and the old presbytery. The children are fascinated by this and I think it helps them to have a deeper sense of belonging and connection.
You will have received a notice about the swimming sports. At level 2 we cannot have any spectators at the event and we would really like to be able to have our families join us. So we have elected to have the swimming sports next Tuesday morning. This gives us an option/hope of being able to open it up to families at Level 1. If we are not at Level 1, at least we tried and we will have the sports next Tuesday but it will have to be a closed event.
Celebration Assembly
Unfortunately we cannot have families at assembly this week due to Level 2 but please keep the 2.30pm slot bookmarked to join us for assemblies at Level 1.
Sacramental Program
Sadly we were not able to do our Commitment Mass on Sunday due to Level 2 restrictions. Sixteen of our students are engaged in the Sacramental Program this year and at the moment they are preparing for Reconciliation which will happen at the 9.30am mass on Sunday 14 March. We wish the children and their families many blessings for their sacramental journey in 2021.
