Principal's News Term 2 Week 6 2021

Support Staff Week

We would like to thank our amazing support staff: Mrs Rzepecky, Mrs Brien, Mrs Spillane, Mrs Fatafehi, Mrs Stringer and Miss Pryce.  Here is a short movie made by the children to thank them:

Mufti Day and Sausage Sizzle

Our annual International Food Festival is Sunday 26th September at St Joseph's.  On Thursday, 24 June, we will be having a mufti day (please bring a gold coin donation) and a sausage sizzle for lunch.  The sausages will be $2 for sausage and bread.  Please bring the $2 on Tuesday 22nd and orders will be taken in the office before school.

Class Visits

Fr Wayne has been visiting classes to participate in religious education conversations.   Our older students have discussed what the Kingdom of God is like and the problem of evil in the world, whereas our younger students are more interested in finding out more about Fr Wayne's life.

Concerns

Just a reminder that our door is always open.  If you have any concerns at all please contact your child's teacher and they are always open to having a chat at an agreed time.  It is much better to sort things out at a low level and restore understanding early on.  There are usually more than two sides to a story and it's worth getting the bigger picture.  I remember when my sons were at St Joseph's, I would come home and they would have spun a yarn to their Dad, which in no way represented the school day.  I knew the balance of the story because I was their teacher and I was there.  If you are not sure of something that has been asked, or of what is happening, again please contact us and we will help.

School Reports

This weekend parents will be receiving some background information to help them understand the curriculum levels on our school reports.  I will be available in the staffroom at 2.30pm and 6.00pm next Monday 14 June to explain the reports to anyone who is interested.  I advise you to come along and have a chat about them as I think that will help you get a lot more out of the report.

North Otago Music Festival

St Joseph's once again hosted other North Otago schools to practice for the North Otago Music Festival.  These clips show the sign language version of the National Anthem as well as the boys' kapa haka part.

Technology in the Curriculum

A couple of blogs ago I published photos of the intermediate students coding the Hummingbird robotics kits.  They are now making installations which will be powered by their coded robotics to feature at our Children's Museum on Thursday 8th July.

Junior Quadrangular Tournament

This is a Catholic tournament between the Catholic high schools in the Dunedin and Southland Diocese.  Well done to a selection of our year 6, 7, and 8s who represented St Kevin's for the tournament.

God Bless and Aroha
Lorraine
