Student Blogger of the Week

Junior Leaders

Open Morning
You are invited to come into our school and see it in action at 11.00 am on Tuesday 8th September. We will meet in Ruma Koru for a talk and an opportunity for a parent forum to ask questions. Afterwards we will tour through the school. Please come to the office and sign in first.

Sandpit
A huge thank you to Mrs Burke and her husband Tim as well as their beautiful daughter Rose who helped to build our new junior school sandpit last weekend. Special thanks goes to Placemakers for donating some of the wood and Road Metal Works for donating all of the sand. We received a very special $250 donation towards the overall costs from Whitestone Contracting in recognition of Micheal McLaren and his love and passion for the outdoors, ensuring that all children had fun in our playground.

Pasifika Group for Tongan Language Week
Thank you to our children and parents who helped to prepare and present wonderful performances at the Oamaru Library, Glenwarren kindergarten and Little Wonders. We are so proud of them all and looking forward to their performance at assembly tomorrow.

A special thanks to all of our dedicated coaches, managers and supporters for your contribution to our winter sports codes for 2015. We have had a very successful season and congratulate all children, in particular those who made it to representative level.

2. Special Character - Week 7 Term 3 2015

The Catholic social teaching principle of Stewardship – kaitiakitanga – is about being responsible guardians. We are kaitiaki - guardians of the earth. Exercising stewardship is caring for the gifts God has given us, including the environment, our own personal talents and other resources.

Pope Francis announced 'World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation' to be celebrated on September 1st annually.
On Tuesday 1st September St. Joseph's celebrated 'World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation' with a special liturgy at Koutuitui (1.50 pm). We shared some 'Youtube' clips that showed us some ways that we are destroying our earth but also ways that we, as responsible guardians of our earth, can take care of our earth so that it will still be able to provide for our future generations. We finished with some prayers, Pope Francis' prayer for creation and a song.

Altar Servers

2016 Attendance Dues for the Diocese of Dunedin
There will be no increase in the 2016 diocese fees for St Joseph's and the rates will stand at $420.00 per child, per annum.  A letter from the Diocese is attached explaining the fees.

Bibles
All children who have started in the new entrants class this year will receive a bible at assembly tomorrow.

Buses
Any child who catches the south bound bus is to stay at school and catch the bus at 3.40 pm as from today.  They are not to catch the town bus to Waitaki Boys High School.

Gymnastic Club
Is open to any child who would like to be involved in a gymnastic display for the school in early term 4. Practices are on Friday afternoons from 3.10 to 4.00 pm.  If anyone is interested or wants to know more information, please contact the office or Mrs Susie Jorgensen on 437 0504.

Keeping Ourselves Safe Programme
A booklet to support the Keeping Ourselves Safe (KOS) programme will be given out to each family in the junior school today. We recently held a parent consultation meeting at school with the support of our police education officer Constable Carrie Hamilton.
Keeping Kids Safer is a guide book to help parents and caregivers keep their children safe from all forms of abuse. It provides information about abuse, suggestions as to how you can help your children avoid abuse, what you should do if you think your child has been abused and where you can find further information and help. It is also important that you support the teaching of Keeping Ourselves Safe at your child’s school. This means making sure that you help your child with any home tasks that are set. Talk to your child about what they learnt at school and reinforce these messages at home.

Lost Property
There is a large amount of unclaimed and unnamed clothing in the lost property room.  Anything not claimed will be recycled tomorrow.  There are a lot of jackets, jerseys, sun hats and warm up clothing in there.   Please be vigilant in naming any clothing that your child owns including renaming any second hand clothing.  Any queries, please ring the office.

Otago Cross Country Champs
Good luck to our 3 competitors, Hotili Asi, Max Fatafehi and Sebastian Spillane who are competing at the Otago Cross Country champs tomorrow.

Summer Sports

4. Yr 5 & 7 Mixed Netball Tournament

Last Tuesday and Thursday we sent down a mixed Yr 5 and a Yr 7 team to play in an Otago netball primary school tournament in Dunedin. The year 5 team won all their pool games and won against Valley in the final.  In their competition they had to dress as a country and the year 5 team had been given India as their country.  This weekend they travel down to Balclutha where they will play against schools from Southland.

The year 7 team won ended up getting 4th in their grade and only lost by 1 goal to being third and they lost by 2 goals to the eventual winners.

There were about 18 teams in each grade and we would like to thank all the parents, drivers and coaches who went down and supported both teams.
