Rippa Rugby
A big thank you to Lee Woodhouse and Jody Robinson who transported and coached our Yr 5/6 Rippa Rugby team in Timaru last week.  Due to weather conditions, the games were played on the hockey turf instead of grass which changed the game plans a bit. We won 3 games and lost 2 and ended up getting 3rd.  Well done.

St Joseph's Timaru Interschool
The permission slips and money were due back today and only half the families have returned their permission slips.  The forms and money have to be in before we go as we are paying for the pool and hydroslide at the time.  Please ensure your money and permission forms are handed in immediately.

St Mary's Interschool
This week our Yr 8 children participated in the annual St Mary's from Mosgiel interschool which was played out at St Kevin's College.  Every child participated in one or more games and played with great skill and sportsmanship. A very big thank you to St Kevin's College and Sarah Clapperton (Sports Coordinator) who allowed us to use their grounds, organised our wonderful referees for us and for loaning us their rugby tops to play in.  Thank you to the wonderful parents who helped and supported the children on the day. The games were closely contested and some were only won in the last few minutes, especially the rugby and basketball.  The result came down to the last game of basketball which was a real thriller and could have gone either way.  Results are:

Football - won by St Mary's - 6-1
Rugby 7 aside - won by St Joseph's 41-33
Netball - won by St Mary's - 25-20
Basketball mixed - won by St Joseph's - 61-40
 Basketball mixed - won by St Joseph's - 37-32

• More FM Oamaru Mid Winter Swim - held on Sunday 24th June at the Waitaki Aquatic Centre from 11.00 am to 1.00 pm and it is FREE entry.  Music, costumes, laughs and prizes.  Come dressed up in your most hilarious costumes and have fun.

MINIBALL AND BASKETBALL INFORMATION

Reminders:

·         The lights are NOT to be touched by anyone except the duty team parents.  If the lights get turned off, it takes 10 minutes for them to come back on again.

·         Duty Teams – all the information you need is on the score sheets.  Please remember to put bags, balls, clocks etc. away at the end of the night and have a quick clean-up of rubbish in your court.  We appreciate all the help!

·         The people who referee are VOLUNTEERS.  PLEASE do not talk back to them or yell at them.  Remember, your behaviour sets an example for ALL.

·         Teams are still not doing their duties.  I have a list of teams who will not be getting their game points due to not doing score bench and/or referee duties.  At the end of the season, this could be the difference to your team being in the semi/finals or not.

·         Thanks to ALL the people who do their duties, coach the teams and support the kinds in a POSITIVE ACTIVE way   …. We love that.

Our Year 7 & 8 Young Vinnies



Union Meeting
On Wednesday 27th June all of the teachers are attending the NZEI union meeting in the afternoon.   This meeting is about the conditions that our profession needs in order to get on with teaching and learning and ensure we have quality teachers for the future.  The school has to remain open during this time.  We request that you make arrangements to pick your child up at 12.30 pm that day and that you let your child's teacher or the office know BEFOREHAND that you will do this.  If you pick your child up on the day PLEASE SIGN THEM OUT at the office so we are sure of their safety otherwise we will have to ring you to see where they are.  If you are not able to pick your child up they should bring a board game to school to play in the afternoon.  Remaining children will be in the hall with me.  I will be the only qualified teacher on site with our support staff.

An Update on Reporting and Student Conferencing at St Joseph's

This year, we have greater freedom in our reports and we've renewed our commitment to enable our learners to be lifelong learners, fluent in the use of their key competencies.

Our teachers have worked very hard with the students to help them gain a deeper understanding of their own learning and the learning processes behind it. According to age and stage and as far as possible we have enabled the children to write their own comments on their reports as a record of what they have learnt. Anyone who thinks this is a cop out needs to think again! This is NOT a case of the teacher handing the report to the child and getting them to write it themselves. This is much harder for the teachers and requires a lot more work to make happen, but we think its worth it. Each comment requires deep understanding on the part of the child and the teacher has had to put in a lot of specific teaching to enable the child to reflect REALISTICALLY on their learning. There's been a different focus each week throughout the year so that the children are able to make real comments. The teacher will still determine the curriculum level and affirm or challenge the child's comment. The teacher will also write the overall general comment on how the student is going.

I would like to emphasise that this is a trial at this stage and the teachers are working very hard on it and we will need to do some group reflections as we progress so that we iron out the many difficulties inherent in such a project. We are asking for your support and participation in this process.

I would like to take the opportunity to explain our new reporting system and the upcoming term 3 student-parent interviews to you in more depth. Please join us on Monday 2nd July at 6.30pm in the staffroom and I will explain to you the system we are trialling, how to make the best use of your child's report and the feedback we're asking for from you.

Lateness and Absence Notification
Please try to have all children at school before 9.00 am to ensure they have the best start they can to the day.

Our office staff often spend a considerable amount of time in the morning chasing up unexplained absences (children who are absent and not accounted for). If your child is going to be away please email office@stjoseph.school.nz, ring 434 8856 or text 027 434 8860 to the office to let us know the reason. The worst thing that could happen is one day a child has genuinely gone missing and we don't get to it straight away because we're busying ringing up all the people who haven't told us why their child is not at school. Please help us with this.

2. Special Character Term 2 - Week 7 2018

    Sacramental Programme 
There will be a second parent meeting for parents who are helping prepare their children in making their Confirmation on Monday June 18 at 7pm in the staffroom.

Mrs Winders will also be taking two sessions during school time and children will practice with Fr Wayne and Bishop Dooley on Friday June 22 at 1.30 pm in the church. Confirmation Mass will be with Bishop Dooley June 24 at 9.30 am followed by a shared morning tea afterwards in the Dean O'Reilly Lounge.

This Week's Faith Fact:-


 Suzanne Aubert Birthday. New Zealand’s first Saint? Suzanne Aubert (19 June 1835 – 1 October 1926), better known to many as Sister Mary Joseph or Mother Aubert. She started a home for orphans and the under-privileged in Jerusalem, New Zealand on the Whanganui River in 1885. Suzanne first came to New Zealand in 1860 to educate Māori children. Among many other great works of faith and compassion she founded a religious order, the Daughters of Our Lady of Compassion in 1892. Suzanne also started two hospitals in Wellington; the first, St Joseph's Home for the Incurables in 1900, and Our Lady's Home of Compassion in 1907. This is not to mention many other works of charity, including medicine.
