1. Principal's News - Week 10, Term 1 2017

Junior School Palm Sunday Presentation

Thank you to the junior school who enacted Palm Sunday for us in mass this morning.  Palm Sunday is when Jesus arrives in Jerusalem and is welcomed by the crowds who proclaim Him as King.  This is only a few days before He is arrested and crucified.

The dramatic events of Holy Week lead up to the centre and most important feast in Christianity which is the Resurrection on Easter Sunday.

During this week the children will be enacting several aspects of Holy Week:

On Wednesday at 2.30 pm the Year 6s will be performing their Easter song followed by the Year 5s presenting "Washing of the Feet" and the Last Supper at 2.40pm.

On Thursday at 2.30 pm the Year 8s will lead the Stations of the Cross in the hall.

We welcome all families to these remembrances.  As these are very solemn events re-enacting the time before Jesus died, we will leave the hall in complete silence on Wednesday and Thursday.  Please help us by also maintaining this silence.

Congratulations to our year 5/6 Rippa Team who won last week's North Otago Rippa Tournament
The team will progress to the regional tournament.

It was great this morning to spot Hannes, Andrew, John and Levi playing a good old fashioned card game before school.

2. Special Character - Week 10, Term 1 2017

Holy Week dates. Parents are most welcome to join us for the following events:-

Holy Thursday April 13- ‘Walking of the Cross’ the Year 8’s will be presenting at 2.30 pm on the last day of Term 1.

A simple Lenten action for the last week of Lent

Sit in the Chapel or quiet place for fifteen minutes of quiet prayer. Just sit there affirming your belief in God's presence with you and of God's love for you. Let it be a prayer of affirmation. Don't ask for anything!

A prayer you may like to pray

Jesus, gentle and humble of heart, full of compassion and maker of peace, you lived in poverty and suffered persecution for the cause of justice. You chose the Cross as the path to glory to show us the way of salvation. May we receive the word of the Gospel joyfully and live by Your example as heirs and citizens of Your kingdom. Amen.

Caritas Challenge
Tomorrow the Yr 8's are holding a mufti day and you asked to bring a gold coin donation to go towards the Caritas Appeal.  They are organising a Caritas Challenge between 11.00 am and 12.30 pm.

Home & School Raffle
Thanks to parents and relatives who volunteered to sell raffle tickets at the supermarkets, your help was much appreciated.  The raffle will be drawn on Monday 10th April with the winners being notified.

Multicultural Day
This year's multicultural day will be held on Tuesday 14th November.  We have let you know earlier so you can organise costumes etc.

Rippa Rugby
Last Friday we entered the North Otago  Rippa Rugby Tournament held at Whitestone Contracting Stadium.  Congratulations to our Yr 5/6 blue team who won their year level and received a $100 voucher.  This team goes on to a regional tournament later on in the year.  Our Yr 7/8 team got 2nd and the other 5/6 team got third.  Thanks to all our parent helpers who either coached or transported the children to and from the venues and to Miss Lind for organising the teams.

Terrific Thursdays
There will be no 'Terrific Thursday' on Thursday 13th April.

• Oamaru Library Special School Holiday Show - held at the library on Thursday 20th April from 10.45 am.  Rainbow Rosalind is an award winning children's singer/songwriter and entertainer.  Her enjoyable, interactive and educational songs are sure to get everyone in the family up on their feet dancing, singing along and learning new things.  Gold coin entry per child.  Show runs for approximately 45 minutes.
• Trustpower 2017 Waitaki District Community Awards - anyone can enter a voluntary group or groups.  Entries are available from your local council office or online at http://www.trustpower.co.nz/communityawards  Entries close on Friday 21st April.

Uniforms
All players will be given their winter sports uniform next Tuesday by Miss Pope. They will receive each sporting code at the same time and will be done class by class.  Any queries, please email Miss Pope on sport@stjoseph.school.nz.

Gear Bags - will be given to coaches next week.

Sports Socks
Are available at the Uniform Shop for both Football and Rugby and cost $15.00 each.

Miniball

• The Breakers (Yr 6) team coached by Claire & Glynn Cameron and the Rebels girls team are having their practices on Sundays from 3.00 to 4.00 pm on the following Sundays ... 30th April, 7th May, 14th May and 21st May.  Any queries about these practices need to be directed to the coaches at glynn.claire@hotmail.com or helpfromtracey@gmail.com

• Coach Required for the boys Yr 3/4/5 team and if they do not have a coach they will not be able to play without one.
• Uniforms - all teams are to wear their blue school PE shorts and a top will be supplied.  If a player turns up in an incorrect uniform, they will not play.

• Competition starts on Tuesday 9th May and will run for approximately 15 weeks finishing in August.  There are no games during the school holidays. 
• Every week, each team needs to provide a referee and score bench people.

Basketball

• The boys basketball teams have been split into 2 mixed ability teams.  The boys are allowed to swap and play for each other when the numbers are low or if a team needs some extra help. When the two teams play each other, they have to stay in their own teams.
• Competition starts on Wednesday 10th May and will run for approximately 15 weeks.  There is no games played during the school holidays.

• Mouth guards - Basketball NZ has introduced a programme to make mouth guards compulsory at BBNZ tournaments and have recommended that associations, clubs and schools do the same. At this time, North Otago Basketball policy is that 'Mouth guards are not compulsory but encouraged'.

Netball

• Competition starts on Saturday 6th May for Yrs 5,6,7 and 8 and Yrs 1,2,3 and 4 will start on Saturday 13th May.
• Junior netball for 2017 will run like this:-  Yr 1 and 2 skills for 1 hour, Yr 3 and 4 skills then a 4 x 7 minute game, Yr 5 is 6 aside game using full court for 40 minutes, Yr 6 is 7 aside with big hoops, full court for 40 minutes, Yr 7 and 8 is 7 aside with big hoops, full court for 40 minutes.
• Umpire sessions - will be held on Monday 10th April from 4.00 to 5.00 pm (note new time) at the Taward Street netball courts. Please bring your whistle and sport shoes.
• Coaching Workshop will be held on Friday 6th April from 6.00 to 8.00 pm at the Taward Street netball courts for attacking and defending.  To register please go to the Netball South website.
• Coaching Clinics will be held on Friday 5th May for Yr 5&6 and Yr 7&8 workshops and Friday 12th May for Yr 1-4 workshops.  Please register on the Netball South website.
