1. Principal's News - Week 7, Term 3 2016

Thank Yous
Union Meeting - Thank you for the support of staff who attended the union meeting today.  We are grateful for your co-operation.  The small number of children we had at school were well catered for, so many thanks to the staff who covered their supervision.

LJ Hooker - This week Debbie Jansen from LJ Hooker donated $100 to our school in recognition of house sales in the area and LJ Hooker's policy of giving donations back to the community.  We thank them very much for their kind donation.  If you ring Debbie at LJ Hooker for a free appraisal on your home and end up listing your house exclusive with them and selling it, LJ Hooker will donate $200 to St Joseph's and also give you $200 worth of vouchers.
Fono
A meeting of Tongan parents and families was held at the school last Monday evening.  We talked about the children's progress, what is happening in Junior Hub 1 and about Tongan Language week.

Michael Mangin
We have Michael Mangin singer/songwriter visiting the Parish next Tuesday.  He will spend Monday with the Parish and visit the school on Tuesday to conduct a workshop with all our children.  We already know many of his songs so will be looking forward to learning some more.

Caught Being Good
This week we have been having a 'Caught Being Good' week to celebrate all the good behaviour around the school.  Too often (of necessity) we concentrate on the negative.  Each day children who have gone the extra mile in their learning or in their attitude and helpfulness to others, in school or out, are recognised with a subway voucher.  While we want children to strive to be the best they can be at all times, it is nice to occasionally recognise those who are making an extra effort.
Congratulations to Elenoa  Asi, Georgia Fox, Cushla Bridges, Max Fatafehi, Riley Tuffley and Sam Asi.  Here are some reasons why the children received the vouchers:

  • staying on task
  • following instructions
  • working independently
  • helping a fellow class mate at break time
  • picking up rubbish on Dee Street on the way to school
  • volunteering to stay in at break and finish work

Advance Notice
There will be a Teacher Only Day on Friday 21st October, the Friday before Labour weekend to enable staff to take part in Professional Development.

1. Principal's News - Week 6, Term 3 2016

Welcome
We welcome Mrs Julie Moore to our school.  Julie is a very experienced teacher and is supporting learning in Junior Hub 1 and doing teacher release throughout the school.

Singing Cup Auditions
I was delighted to be part of the auditions for the annual Singing Cup on Tuesday.  The children who practiced and presented their songs are to be congratulated.  A particular shout out for the Yr 8 students for their wonderful support of their class mates.  We look forward to the final.
Children who were absent from the auditions on Tuesday will have their auditions tomorrow at lunch time and the finalists will be notified at 3.00 pm. Thank you to the children who auditioned and to Mrs Gunn who enjoyed her experience and will be back for the finals on Tuesday 20th  September at 9.00 am.

Kids for Kids
Well done again to the choir children who took part in the 'Kids for Kids' concert with singer Jacqui Clarke last night.  I was lucky enough to attend the morning rehearsal and the children sounded amazing.  The 'Kids for Kids' concert is a charity fundraiser for World Vision Sponsorship for children.  St Joseph's sang with children from Oamaru Intermediate, Oamaru North, Totara, Fenwick and Papakaio and each child received a World Vision bracelet and certificate.  Thank you to Mrs Brookes and the parents for your support.

Reminder - School Closure
Please remember that next Thursday 8th September, school does not begin until 11.00 am to allow
staff to attend a combined union meeting from 9.00 to 11.00 am.   All schools are affected by this union meeting. Could you please let the office know if you are unable to supervise your children at home.  There will be a skeleton staff available for supervision only.
Please note that the country and town buses will be running two and a half hours later (150 minutes) in the morning so if you get picked up at 7.35 am in the morning, it will be 10.05 am for that day only.  If you have any concerns about the bus timetable for that morning, please ring Ritchies on 434 7964.  The 3 secondary schools are starting at 11.20 am and most of the primary schools are starting at 11.00 am.

2. Special Character - Week 6 Term 3 2016

The Catholic Bishops of New Zealand set aside a week in September for Social Justice Week.
In 2016, Social Justice Week runs from 11-17 September and the focus is on migration.
Today, migration is changing our world in ways that we cannot ignore. This year’s topic for Social Justice Week focuses on migration and encourages students and teachers to share migration stories and respond through prayer and action.
On Monday 12th we will share a School Liturgy in the hall at 9am. The Liturgy will focus on 'Welcoming Migrants and Refugees in the Jubilee Year of Mercy'. Family, friends and parishioners are warmly welcomed. Class Religious Lessons will centre around 'Prayer and Migration Stories' each day.
