1. Principal's News - Week 3, Term 4 2023

 Dear Parents and Whanau

Camp
Over the last two days, I have had the pleasure of being with the year 6 students at Camp IONA.  We were challenged with river crossings, ropes work, canoeing, archery and yachting.  Camp is always a great time and I am looking forward to the year 7/8 camp in late November.

School Athletics
We are busy practicing for school athletics, a day we share with Te Pakihi o Maru.  This is on Tuesday 7th November with a postponement day of Thursday 9th November.  We still need parents / older siblings to help out on the day and if you can help, please contact the office.

School Photos
You should have received an email from the school photographer 'Photolife' with a code and price list to order school photos.  If you have not got this code, check your junk box and spam, and then if all else fails, call the office as we have all the codes.  To get the free delivery, photos need to be ordered by Friday 17th November.

School Closed
New Zealand schools are introducing a new curriculum and schools have been granted a day to introduce this to staff.  Our school will be CLOSED for instruction on FRIDAY 17TH NOVEMBER.  We know this is a disruption to you but staff need a clear day in which to immerse themselves into new learnings for the benefit of the children.

Board of Trustees
Our Board of Trustees has been working with the St Kevin's Board to create a shared vision and strategic plan for the future of Catholic education in North Otago.  Last week, 8 members of the parish, St Joseph's BOT and St Kevin's BOT visited schools in the Brisbane area to help our big-vision thinking.  All members came back excited and united.  We look forward to all working together.

God Bless

Labour Day

Labour Day commemorates the struggle for an eight-hour working day. New Zealand workers were among the first in the world to claim this right when, in 1840, the carpenter Samuel Parnell won an eight-hour day in Wellington. Labour Day was first celebrated in New Zealand on 28 October 1890.

Let us pray

Loving God, you guide the hands of all who labour, as they work to build, create, and produce. Thank you for the gift of strong bodies and astute minds that allow them to accomplish so many great things. Give them assurance of a good income and provide for them all the resources, strength, and support that they need. Gracious God, you bless all in so many different ways. Shower all of your children, as they labour, with your blessing and love. Amen

Below is a message from the Futsal organisers.

Hi Teams,

In terms of game timings, notice that we are working with a strict space and time availability and there isn't much room for changes if any. You will notice that we had to squeeze an earlier game - 3:30pm and from 6:00pm onwards we have only one court available but I'm sure we can make it work.

Also, please notice that in the grade 'Year 5-6' we have an odd number of teams which creates a bye. Therefore, we have one team playing 2 consecutive games each week, so the 'bye' team can get a game.

REMINDERS:
  • As in previous years, these teams do not need a coach, only an adult who can look after the team on the day and manage substitutions.
  • Shin pads are recommended during games.
  • 8 players per team recommended – we’d like to keep teams at 8 players maximum, so each player is guaranteed a good amount of game time.
  • All teams MUST be accompanied by a team manager/coordinator and not left to their own to organise or to make subs etc.
  • School sports uniforms are to be worn please. (we will have bibs if colours clash)
  • Draw for each week will be emailed to team managers – we will also email it and post on Football Waitaki Facebook page
  • Sometimes there will be changes that need to be made to the draw, these will be done by 12pm at the latest on the Friday before games so please advise managers of the updated draw then.

  • Games are 13-minute halves
  • Please make sure that your teams vacate the court as quick as possible after their game to make sure the next round of games does not start later.
  • We are making an effort to have referees for all the games. If by any chance your games do not have a referee, please make sure they start on time and we will try to get you a referee as soon as we can.
  • For anyone interested in learning the basics of FUTSAL REFEREEING, we are hosting a 1h online workshop this Thursday at 6:00pm. We will send you email you the link to join tomorrow.
 Kind Regards,
Luis

Labour Day Happenings
Last weekend, Millie Fogarty, a year 7 student competed in the lower South Island Scout regatta at Cromwell.  She versed 4 other clubs from Dunedin and the top of the South Island.  They did rowing, sailing, swimming and triathlon.  There were 6 scouts from Oamaru ranging in age from 10-15 years.  Millie really enjoyed the weekend and said it was really good fun and it didn't matter what ability you had as long as you gave it a go and did your best.

Loud Shirt Day
Millie from Year 7 in addition to her last term's initiative for giving clothing to Vincent de Paul, organised a Loud Shirt Day at school today. Students were asked to wear a loud shirt on the day and bring a gold coin donation. Donations can also be made online here.  We raised $84.00 for this worthwhile charity.
Loud Shirt Day is the annual fundraising campaign of The Hearing House and the Southern Cochlear Implant Programme (SCIP), the only two charities in New Zealand dedicated to helping children and adults with cochlear implants learn to listen and communicate.

Subway
Thank you to Jessie Crawford who has been correlating our Subway lunch orders for the past few months.  Jessie is unavailable to carry it on and therefore we are looking for someone who has a spare 45-60 minutes on a Friday morning to do the subway orders.  Please contact the office if you are interested.
Please note there is chocolate milk available @ $2.00 each with the subway lunches.

Temporary Road Closure
Usk Street will be closed from Tuesday 31st October to Thursday 2nd November due to resealing.  Children are to be dropped off / picked up from the Reed Street entrance or Torridge Street gate.  We ask for consideration and patience at this time as the road will be very busy.  There will be no access to the school carpark.

Welcome
We warmly welcome Caysn M who started school this week.

Work Wanted
One of our new school families wants some work and would be interested in cleaning, packing etc within school hours.  Please contact the office if you can help.

Community Notices

1. Principal's News - Week 1, Term 4 2023

 Dear Parents and Whanau

Welcome back to term 4 for a term that is very full and we will see the end of year rush up before we know it.  I have settled back in after my time away and look forward to my final term with you.

I was very pleased that the Board was able to make an appointment for your permanent principal. I will be working with Sara (Jones-Hogan) for a smooth transition for 2024 throughout the term.

A reminder that this is a 'hats' term and all children need a brimmer hat to be outside for break times and PE.

Thank you for being so understanding about the school photos on the first day of term.  This was far from ideal timing.  We had arranged photos later in the week but the photographer had double booked themselves.  We will send out further information about ordering the photos when they have processed our order.

On Wednesday, the children had an excellent session of cricket with Cricket Otago.  The sessions were high-energy and really engaging for the children.

Athletics is our main sport focus at present with practice for the senior students.  Our athletics day for both juniors and seniors is on Tuesday 7th November with a postponement day on Thursday 9th November.

We had a very successful Book Fair on the last week of the term.  I would like to thank Sarah Sollano for all her organisation and hard work.  We receive a significant number of books for our school library through your support at the Book Fair.  Thank you to all of you who supported this event.

Our Board of Trustees has two members.  We welcome Justine Rogers (Theo Mestrom's mum) as our new parent representative and Nicola Winders as our new staff representative.  We will meet on Tuesday 24th October which is an open meeting and you are welcome at any time.

A reminder that school will be closed on Monday 23rd October for Labour Weekend.

Go the 'All Blacks' this weekend and I encourage you to get out and vote to support our democratic process.

God Bless

Ngā Kōhatu Touchstones

You may see touchstones around our school. What are Touch stones? Touch stones can ground us and connect us, they are precious; they were used in European culture to help judge a true measure.

Touchstones are to emphasise an aspect of your child's journey through school life. Each touchstone has a nuance of distinction from other year levels and a sense of progression. In the course of up to 13 years of education in Catholic schools, young people will spend time with each touchstone on this Gospel-based journey.

Years 1 and 2  Whakatau Welcomed
Jesus was welcomed at Bethlehem by whānau, shepherds, angels and wise men. He and his family also experienced the pain of not being welcomed.

To think about  I am welcomed I have welcomed others

Pope John XXIII, changed the culture in the Vatican. He visited the sick, the poor, and prisoners. He was a father figure for the world, described as a man with a wonderful sense of humour, being open-hearted, loving, caring, even funny at times. Pope John XXlll is remembered as “Il Papa Buono,” the Good Pope, an ‘authentic image of the Good Shepherd.

Pope Francis approved John XXIII for canonization (being named a Saint) on June 3, 2013, the 50th anniversary of his death
