1. Principal News - Week 5 Term 2

Peered Writing in action at the next Family Learning Hui
A few weeks ago I explained that the teachers were training the children to take part in our Peered Writing project. This supports and strengthens children's writing as well as having a range of social benefits. You are all welcome to join us next Thursday 9th June for our next Family Learning Hui from 6:30 -7:30 to learn from the children about peered writing.
Here are a few points about the programme:
  • Children all get the same message and language for when they transition through the school.
  • Helps all students, not just targeted learners but valuable for extending children as well.
  • Inclusive, team approach across the whole school.
  • Social interactions with all students and all abilities.
  • Good for children's self esteem.
  • Gives the children a deeper understanding about their learning.
  • Successful with English Language Learners.
  • First time we have done a whole school project of this kind and this is excellent for whole school professional learning and consistency of practise.
  • Once children are confident about what is expected of them, they become very engaged in the process and enjoy it.
  • Research proves this is the best way for children to learn and be able to articulate their learning.
New Staff for Term 3
We are delighted to announce that Mrs Jill Baird and Miss Anna Mulholland have been appointed to positions for next term.
Mrs Jill Baird is a retired and well respected experienced Catholic school principal who is presently residing in Cromwell. Mrs Baird has been appointed to the caretaker principal role for Term 3 until our new principal is appointed for Term 4. Our board chair Bev Conlan and I spent time with Mrs Baird last week and she is looking forward to working with Mr Cartlidge and our staff in Term 3. I will be spending a day with Mrs Baird in Cromwell at the end of June to share more information about our school and help to ensure she is well prepared for the role.  A photo of Mrs Baird will be updated later.

Miss Anna Mulholland will take over from Mrs Burke when she goes on maternity leave during the second half of Term 3. Miss Mulholland has experience with the Incredible Years teaching programme and has strengths in literacy and numeracy. Miss Mulholland is also a keen sportswoman and we are looking forward to welcoming her to our teaching team in Term 3.
Basketball hoops
We were fortunate to be successful with a Youthtown grant for our new basketball/netball hoops. As a result we have our old ones available for free to a good home. Please let us know if your interested and we can arrange for our caretaker Mr Jelgersma to help transport them for you if needed.

2. Special Character Week 5 Term 2 2016

The Fruit of the Holy Spirit is a biblical term that sums up nine attributes of a Christian life according to Paul in his Letter to the Galatians: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
Leading up to Confirmation all Year 4 children have been looking at how we can use the 'Fruit of The Spirit' and how they can make a big difference to the way we live our daily lives and our relationships with others.

On Tuesday 31st May we had our first lesson in preparation to receive the 'Sacrament of Confirmation'. We discussed the Sacraments we have already received (Baptism and Reconciliation) and that receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation is the next step in our 'Journey of Faith'. Confirmation renews and strengthens our baptismal call. In Confirmation we are strengthened with the gifts of the Spirit which enable us to live our Christian life. We will also have lessons on Thursday 2nd and Tuesday 7th June with a practice with Bishop Colin on Friday (usually after lunch).
The children have brought home some worksheets to do. They are focussed on four themes: Naming and Call, Promises, Hands and Oil.
I also sent home a newsletter with details of what happens at the Confirmation Mass on Sunday 12th June.
Please sent along the information card with your child's details on. This is needed by Father Wayne.
Any questions please call in and see me or email me/ adooley@stjoseph.school.nz.
Take care and God Bless
Ann Dooley
Co/Director of Religious Studies

Busy Bumbles - Driver Wanted
Would like to be able to offer 'Before and After School Care' for the families in Oamaru.  We would like to include children from Oamaru Intermediate and Ardgowan schools but to do this, we would need someone to drive our Busy Bumbles van at 8.30 am each morning from St Joseph's school and drop these children back to their schools and collect them again at 3.00 pm.  You would be paid for an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon but it should take less time than this.  We would only require this when we had children from these schools and it would only be during term time.  If you think this is something you would like to do, please chat to Jocelyn for more information.  We would love to hear from you.

Enrolment Days
If your child is turning 5 next year or you know of someone who wants to come to St Joseph's next year, we are holding enrolment meetings on Tuesday 21st and Thursday 23rd June.  Please contact the office to make an appointment.

Free colour pencils
New World are currently running a special on Macleans toothpaste where you buy 2 big tubes of toothpaste and receive a free packet of colouring pencils.  Only while stocks last.

Head Lice
It is that season again when these mites are doing the rounds and this time they are in the Junior Hubs.  Please check your child's hair and treat if necessary.

Holy Shop
This shop is still open in the presbytery while alterations are being done to the outside.  It is open from 9.45 am to 12.00 pm. Prior to Confirmation the shop can be opened before school or up till 2.00 pm.  Other times by arrangement.  Phone Elaine on 434 8543 at the parish office from 8.00 am to 2.00 pm.

Junior School Swimming
Over the last 3 weeks the junior school have had 10 swimming lessons where they have been taught how to swim, water and survival safety and the use of wearing life jackets.  We have noticed how much the children's confidence has grown during this time and some of them can now swim a length in the big pool.  Many thanks to all the parent helpers who helped with walking and helping out at the pool.

Lost
Jonathan Paton has lost his named school jacket.  Please check your child's jacket to ensure they have the correct one.

Mobile Phone Appeal
Did you know that after rainfull 69% of New Zealand's rivers are deemed unsafe for swimming due to contamination!  With statistics like this, The Mobile Phone Appeal is please to announce Sustainable Coastlines as their new charity for the Mobile Phone Appeal.  After $2.5 million dollars donated to the Starship Foundation from the sale of unwanted old mobile phones, it is time for the new charity to benefit from this scheme.  It would be great if you could rummage around in your drawers and toy boxes and bring into school any unwanted mobile phones you may have.  Phone collected help our school gain valuable rewards and also the environment benefits by keeping our landfills free of mobile phones and their array of hazardous toxic substances.  We believe the future of our beautiful coastline and waterways can only be secured if we all work together.
Please drop any unwanted mobile phones you may have in the collection box at the school office.

Mother's Group
Invites you to join us for a craft night next Wednesday 8th June at 7.30 pm, venue to be confirmed.  It would be fabulous if you could come.  RSVP to Daniela on 027 386 2732.  Thank you.

Netball Practice for Yr 3/4 teams
St Joseph's Steel and Maroon teams will be having practices on Thursdays at lunchtime.  Please make sure they are in their PE gear and have suitable footwear.

Parish Freezer
Recently a few of us from our 'Mums Group' met to make some meals for the parish freezer at Kate Finn's place.  We value the wonderful contributions made by families through the Home and School year level that happens a few times a term.  We realise that is difficult providing a main meal for a family and decided to prop up the food in the freezer in support.  Please let us know of any families that need a meal because of sickness, bereavement, new baby in the family, shifting or any other reason that enables us to show our care and concern.  Thank you Jocelyn Marsh.

Pastoral Care
Junior Hub 2: We would be very grateful if the families could kindly donate either non-perishable food items or cooked food items before the end of term.  The items can be tinned foods, boxed cereals, baking or a main meal e.g. soups, casserole, lasagna, muffins or biscuits.  If you are in a position to contribute, thank you.  Please list the food ingredients to alert those people with food allergies.  Please bring your kindly donated food to the school office in the morning.

Telephone Books
Last week the Home and School gave a phone book to each family to try and sell and the cut off date was today in which we have only received replies from 30 families.  Can you please try to sell your book asap.  Thank you.

MAURICE SCANLAN

Maurice Scanlan has been affiliated with and contributed to Marist rugby since the mid 1940’s, and in the latter years of his retirement, continued his heavy involvement with Marist Albion.  All who knew him knew the love and passion he had for the game, and how many tireless hours he gave to Marist and Marist Albion from junior to senior, for so many years.
His effort was recognised by the wider NZ rugby community when he was made a finalist of the Steinlager Rugby Awards ‘Charles Munro Rugby Volunteer of the Year’ only a few years ago.

He will be remembered for his hard working attitude, humour and passion to develop rugby at all levels of the game.  As a former President of the NZ Marist Rugby Federation, Maurice was responsible for establishing the NZ Marist Pompallier Trophy Tournament:  a competition which our junior teams still compete in and enjoy to this very day.
