2. Special Character Week 2Term 4 2021

Welcome, Kia Ora Whanau/Malo e Lelei!

Special Character Focus: Traditional Prayer

On Monday we had a staff meeting with Katrina van de Water our Religious Education Advisor from the Dunedin Diocese about Traditional Prayer-the richness of Catholic prayer. Traditional prayers have emerged from the story of the Church in various times and are part of the ongoing prayer life of the Church. They have become, in essence, part of what it is to "be" Catholic. Thank you Katrina.

School Mass:

Last week's gospel presentation was Ruma Kereru- Year 1/2.  We had a Liturgy to celebrate Ko Hāta Maria, te Matua Wahine o te Atua, Holy Mary, Mother of God. There was no Mass this week. Next week the gospel presentation will be Ruma Pukeko-Year 1/2.

Faith Facts:

Week 2: October 25 – 29 (Green)

25th Labour Day

28th Sts Simon and Jude

31st Mission Sunday

World Mission Sunday is celebrated in every Catholic community in the world. It is first and foremost the celebration that all baptised are missionaries. We participate in the Mission of God – to bring the Good News that God is here and wants to give life abundantly (Jn 10:10).

November 1st is All Saints' Day.

It is a solemn holy day of the Catholic Church. The day is dedicated to the saints of the Church, that is, all those who have attained heaven. It should not be confused with All Souls' Day, which is observed on November 2, and is dedicated to those who have died and not yet reached heaven. All Saints' Day was formally started by Pope Boniface IV, who consecrated the Pantheon at Rome to the Virgin Mary and all the Martyrs on May 13 in 609 AD. Boniface IV also established All Souls' Day, which follows All Saints.

Thank you/ Malo Aupito

1. Principal's News Term 4, Week 1, 2021

Kia Ora,

It is good to be back at school and off to a great start to term 4.  Today we had the most beautiful liturgy to celebrate the hikoi of Te Ara A Maria which is travelling from Bluff up to Wellington and stopping in schools and parishes along the way.  Te Ara a Maria is a painting of Mary holding Baby Jesus by a New Zealand artist, depicted as Maori New Zealanders in a New Zealand setting.  It is absolutely beautiful and Mrs Misiloi and her class did a wonderful job of presenting it this morning.  I have put videos on Facebook too.

Book Week

Next week is book week and we will be displaying books for sale in our STEAM room opposite the hall.  The display will be open for parents to visit at 3-3.30pm Tuesday to Thursday next week.  Please wear a mask.  Eftpos will be available.

Book Character Day

Next Tuesday children may come dressed as their favourite book character.  Please do not feel you need to purchase costumes or anything like that.  Let's keep this simple and whatever you can find around your home or make is perfect.  If your child does not wish to dress up they can come in normal school uniform.   Here's an old picture from a previous book character day.

Tsunami Drill

A reminder that we are practising our tsunami drill next Thursday as the sample school for New Zealand.   We will be live on Breakfast TV at 7.55 am and again at 8.55 am.   The drill will also be live-streamed through Facebook.  In consultation with NEMA I have changed our tsunami drill and we will be going to the grassy area behind the Parish Centre.  This is 31m above sea level and will be an adequate height.  If we ever have an earthquake we will always move to higher ground and this is where you will collect your children.

Multicultural Day

This is on Wednesday 10th November.  We will need to do it slightly differently for Level 2 and teachers will be running the classroom workshops but they will need your input for ideas.  We love to see our cultural performances in the afternoon and please go ahead and organise something for this.  This will be live-streamed and if you have organised a group you will be able to come into school to supervise them.

All children please come wearing cultural clothes and bring a meal to share at lunchtime.

Mufti Day

This is this Friday please bring a gold coin donation to contribute to the Waitaki Sports Centre

Vaccination Heads up

Please note parent helpers will need to have their first Covid vaccination by 15 November and second by 1 January 2022.

Athletics

There is no North Otago athletics this year due to our Covid restrictions and for the same reason, we will be having athletics based here at school this year rather than at the stadium.  We will need some parent helpers and parents may also come to watch.  You will need to wear masks and keep 2m away from children please.

Teacher Only Day Reminders

These are Monday 1st November

Tuesday 30th November.

School will be closed on these days.

God Bless and Aroha,

Lorraine

2,Special Character Week 1 Term 4 2021

Welcome, Kia Ora Whanau/Malo e Lelei!

Religious Education Focus: This term we are teaching the Church Strand- Community of Disciples-Te Whanau a te Karaiti. The key ideas for our children to understand concepts of the Church Strand are:

1. The Church is the people united with God

2. We all have a responsibility in the Church

3. There are formal responsibilities in the Church

4. The mission of the Church is to bring about the Kingdom of God on Earth.

The Synod 2021-2023-In this Synod, Pope Francis is inviting the entire Church to focus on the theme – “For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, and Mission.” A synodal means “journey together” which enacts and manifests the nature of the Church as a pilgrim Church and missionary people of God.

On October 17th the world celebrated the opening of the Synod. Our Dunedin Diocese Synod Gathering will be in December at Holy Cross Mosgiel. We need to recognise and appreciate the Church- "as both gift and task" as we use the variety of charisms and gifts that God has bestowed upon us for the benefit of the Church community and families on this "journey together".

School Mass:

Last week's of term 3 we had zoom Mass and Ruma Kiwi-Year 3 presented the gospel. This week's gospel presentation will be Ruma Kereru- Year 1/2. There was no Mass but we had a Liturgy to celebrate Te Ara a Maria hikoi. The way of Mary, Our Lady, Mother of God. Ko Hāta Maria, te Matua Wahine o te Atua, Holy Mary, Mother of God.

Next week there will be no Mass but in Week3 the gospel presentation will be Ruma Pukeko Year 1/2. Malo 'Aupito.

Name: Ko Hāta Maria, te Matua Wahine o te Atua Translation: Holy Mary, Mother of God Artist: Damien Walker (Studio of Saint Philomena, Rangiora) Māori advisor: Anthony Kemp

To celebrate the rededication of Aotearoa New Zealand to Mary, Mother of God, Assumed into Heaven, our Bishops commissioned a new piece of art. They wanted a depiction of Mary that connects her to our country. The piece challenges us to see her as a woman of incredible strength and the place she holds in our hearts and our community today.

Faith Facts:

Week 1: October 18 – 22 (Green)

18th St Luke, evangelist

Luke Gospel. Forgiveness and God's mercy to sinners is also of first importance to Luke. Only in Luke’s gospel do we hear the story of the Prodigal Son welcomed back by the overjoyed father. Only in Luke do we hear of the forgiven woman disrupting the feast by washing Jesus' feet with her tears. Throughout Luke's gospel, Jesus takes the side of the sinner who wants to return to God's mercy

Thank you/ Malo Aupito

Futsal
This competition starts on Monday 1st November and further information will be forwarded on to the teams once we receive it.  We are still looking for managers for these teams which basically involves subbing the children on and off the court.  The rules are very few and very easy to learn.  Please let Mrs Brien know if you can help.
