1. Principals News - Week 1, Term 3 2016

Dominican Choir
Well done and thanks to the choir members who attended the Dominican celebration on Saturday night.  You were fabulous.  Our head boy Seth Sinclair gave a very confident and well received speech.  Thank you to Mrs Brookes and everyone who took part.

Cross Country
Students in Junior Hub 1 (Mrs Misiloi and Miss Gray's class) will not be participating in the Cross Country held at the Oamaru Race Course next Wednesday as there is a support person from out of town coming to work with these students and teachers and she can only come next Wednesday and Thursday.  The children will still run in a cross country course on Friday 12th August at 2.00 pm at school organised by our Yr 8 students.

Congratulations
To Mrs Brookes who was presented with her Leadership Certificate in teaching Religious Education by Fr Wayne at Mass on Tuesday. This certificate is obtained by being observed by members of the Diocese and ongoing Professional Development in the catholic faith.

Father Wayne is away on holiday at the moment and we wish him a well deserved rest.

Another great ski day on Monday with everyone being on their best behaviour.  Well done all.

School Mass was held on Tuesday this week with a great Gospel dramatisation by Mrs Dooley's class.

Swim for Life Programme for Yrs 1-4
Last term the junior school went to the Waitaki Aquatic centre to participate in a 'Swim for Life' passport programme.  This programme taught the children to learn water survival safety skills and how to swim.  We were very pleased with the accomplishment of our students compared to the national average and wanted to share their results with you.

2. Special Character - Week 2 Term 3 2016

As I mentioned last week PRAYER is a very big part of what we do at St. Joseph's. We all start our day with PRAYER and finish our day with a PRAYER.
We decided to start each week coming together as a school in prayer. So on Monday we gathered in the hall to begin our week thanking God for everything we have been given and to appreciate how fortunate we are to be here. We shared the weeks Gospel, said the the Dominican Prayer and finished with a song.
In the holidays I reread a book called 'Painting Rainbows with Broken Crayons' by Bernadette McCarver Snyder. It is a small book with prayers for teachers, parents and caregivers. I am going to share another one with you.

I'm OK, you're OK - but is that OK?

Today, Lord, we are constantly told to build up a child's self esteem and that is certainly important. But what if we keep saying, "You're OK," and the child knows that's not true? OR what if we say "You're OK, and don't mean it? Children have that uncanny knack of seeing through our words. They can almost always tell when we're saying something we don't really believe.
Help us, Lord, to think before we speak. Help us to find out what's happening with a child who might NOT be OK and try to fix what's wrong instead of just glossing over it. You can cover up a little sore with a bandage but underneath, it's still a sore - and it might even get worse if you don't apply the right medicine. You can never ONLY cover up a problem.
So help us, Lord, to take time to get to KNOW what's happening with each child before we say, "You're OK". It won't help them OR us to pretend things are all right when they're really all wrong.
We were all made in YOUR image, Lord. Help us to remember that. Help us to live lives that will truly reflect YOUR image. Only then can we build up our own self-images - and show children how to build theirs. Only then can we say "I'm OK, you're OK."

Correction of Error
Last week in the Community Notices under 'A Fun Evening with Jo Seagar' I accidentally put the ticket price as $57.00 (which I thought was quite dear at the time) but it should be $15.00 (which is more affordable).  Sorry for any inconvenience caused.  Thanks Editor.

Cross Country - Please check the new information on this letter
Next Wednesday 10th August, we are having our annual cross country held at the Oamaru Race Course.  The Junior Hub 1 children will not be racing today but they will run their cross country on Friday 12th August at school at 2.00 pm.  The course is different this year to align with the new North Otago course that was run last year.  The entrance for parents will be through the main southern entrance and then walking round the track to the southern end.  Supporters can watch the races from the marked viewing area.  Please keep off the track.
Children will run in their year level not their age groups as in previous years.  Children can wear their PE gear to school and have with them warm trousers (navy or black), school jersey or jacket and a drink bottle.  Any children with asthma or allergies are to make sure they have with them any medications required and hand them to their class teacher.

The whole school will be travelling out by bus at 9.30 am.  Note change of year start times:

Yr 2     10.00 am
Yr 3     10.10 am
Yr 4     10.20 am
Yr 5     10.30 am
Yr 6     10.40 am
Yr 7     10.50 am
Yr 8     11.00 am

In order for this event to run safely, Mrs Souness requires a number of marshals.  Please let her know if you can help.  They also require a number of picnic rugs and tarpaulins for the students to sit on so if you have any can you please drop them off to your class teacher.

The postponement date for the cross country will be held on Tuesday 16th August at school.

Entertainment Books
Fergus McMullan's mum (Karen) is selling the Entertainment Book this year on behalf of the Rock and Mineral Club and the Oamaru Drawing Club.  If you would like one of these books, please phone or text Karen on 027 200 6873.

First Communion

Home & School Raffle
This week each family received a raffle card to sell for their term 3 fundraiser. Please look out for this raffle card in your child's bag.  Thank you to the families who have already returned their sold raffle cards.  All sold raffle cards need to be returned to the school office by Monday 15th August as the raffle will be drawn on Friday 26th August or when all the tickets are sold.  They also require parents to assist us with the selling of raffle tickets at Countdown Supermarket on Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th August from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm each day.  Shifts will be for 60 minutes each. Please contact Suzanne Mather by phone or text on 027 232 4115 or email jc.sjmather@gmail.com if you are able to help.
