1. Principal's New Week 4 Term 2 2016

Board of Trustees Elections
Congratulations to the following parent trustees who have been nominated to our board : Claire Cameron, Sharni Cunningham, Rose Davies, Grant Finn, Michael Plieger and to our new staff trustee Paul Cartlidge. As the number of valid nominations was fewer then the number of vacancies, they were all elected to take up office for our next board meeting on the 28th June. Fr W Healey, Adrienne Wylie and Beverley Conlan have been confirmed as Proprietor's Appointees by Bishop Colin Campbell.
Special thanks to our Returning Officer Tony Brady.
Extra special thanks to Lynne Cullimore, Des Burke and Ann Dooley who are all retiring from the board. They have all made valuable contributions to the board during their years on the board and we appreciate their hard work and commitment towards our school.
Bev Conlan our Board Chair will share more information with you on the Board Blog.

Talented St Joseph's Learners
Congratulations to all of our children who participated in the Performing Arts competitions and the rugby tournament last weekend. We are so proud of all of you for showing us how to Reach for the Stars as Lifelong Learners in the Catholic Faith.

Confirmation Meetings
Thanks to all of the parents and prayer partners who attend the first Confirmation meeting on Monday. The second meeting takes place this coming Monday. We look forward to our whole community preparing to celebrate Confirmation with the children and their families on Sunday 12th June with Bishop Colin.

2. Special Character - Week 4 Term 2 2014

Leading up to receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation we have been looking at the 'Fruit of the Spirit' as part of Year 4's Holy Spirit Strand. Confirmation lessons will begin next week in preparing the children to receive this wonderful Sacrament. Hopefully the children have brought home their Confirmation card which needs to be filled in and sent back as soon as you can.
As part of the children's preparation in receiving this Sacrament it would be lovely to see the children attending Mass (Saturday 5pm/Sunday 9.30am) with their families.
Thank you.

The Fruit of the Holy Spirit is a biblical term that sums up nine attributes of a Christian life according to Paul in his Letter to the Galatians: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

5. Report on the NZ Marist Pompallier Trophy

The group of under 9, 11 and 13 boys who represented St Joseph’s at the NZ Marist Pompallier Trophy in Timaru on Sunday. The other clubs competing were Marist Albion from Christchurch, Ashburton Celtic and Timaru Celtic.
An enjoyable day was had by all and everyone represented the club very well. St Joseph’s won the Under 9 sprint and Under 13 sprint, finished second in the Under 11, won all three 10 man relay races and won the Under 13 Tug of War.
The under 13s won all three of their 10 a side rugby matches, the under 11s were undefeated, winning one and drawing two games and a young under 9 side had a great day playing three games of rugby for three losses.
A big thank you to Chris Cant, Gary Whiston, Glynn Cameron, Lee Woodhouse and Jeff Spillane for coaching the teams and an equally big thank you to all of the parents that supported St Joseph’s on the day.

The victorious Under 13 team that won all three games of rugby they played. They also won the tug of war, team relay and Taine Cooper won the sprint race with Peleki coming in second.

St Joseph’s Under 13 captain Peleki Tangifolau holding the Pompallier Trophy for the overall winner of the competition. St Joseph’s finished tied for first with Timaru Celtic.

1. Principal News Week 3 Term 2 2016

Catholic School's Day 2016
It was wonderful for our students to be able to share this special day with our St Kevin's family. The Basilica was full to capacity with our young leaders and parishioners of the future celebrating our mission and identity as Catholic Schools. Special thanks to Fr Wayne, Mrs Dooley, Mrs Brookes, Mrs Misiloi and Mr Mullally from St Kevin's for helping to make this day such a memorable occasion.

Enrolments for 2017
Fr Wayne and I have brought the Enrolment Days forward to the end of this term. If you have siblings in your family turning 5 years old during 2017, or know of any other families wishing to enrol their children for next year, please pass on these dates to them: Tuesday 21st June and Thursday 23rd June. Please contact Anne or Paula in the office to arrange a meeting time for one of these days.

2016 School Trustee Elections - Time for Nominations
Nominations are now being called for, signalling that schools are well underway with one of the most significant democratic processes in New Zealand. All parents, guardians and caregivers of students enrolled in a New Zealand state or state integrated school are eligible to nominate themselves or someone from the community for election to a school board.
Everyone eligible to vote has received a posted nomination form and extra forms should also be available at schools. Forms are also in English and Te Reo on the trustee elections website.
For schools using the common election day of 3 June, nominations must be received by the returning officer by noon tomorrow on the 20 May.

2. Special Character Week 3 Term 2 2016

On Monday 16th May we celebrated
 'Catholic Schools Day'
with St. Kevin's College at St. Patrick's Basilica at 2pm. It was so uplifting to see the Church just bursting at the seams.

On Sunday 12th June, children who received the Sacrament of Reconciliation in Term 4 2015 will be taking their next step on their Journey of Faith, receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation. The children will begin their preparation lessons in weeks 5 and 6 of this term. As well as the preparation lessons we will be looking at the lives of some of the Saints. This will help the children when they come to choose a Saint's name for Confirmation. I will be sending home an information card that needs to filled in and returned to me. This is what the information card looks like. These will come home this week. Please return them as soon as possible as these need to be given to Father Wayne in order to check all information is up to date. Thank you.

We will have a practice with Bishop Colin Campbell on Friday 10th June in the Church. Parents are welcome to join us. I will confirm the time nearer the date. After Confirmation we have morning tea in the hall. Each family is asked to bring a plate to share with their family, prayer partners and parishioners who may wish to join us. Parents from the children who were confirmed in 2015 are asked to help with the morning tea. Please let me know if you are able to help.
Mr and Mrs Wylie will be holding the parent meetings on Monday 23rd and Monday 30th May at 7pm at St. Joseph's School. Adrienne Wylie will be available to hold another meeting if this does not suit some parents. Adrienne will be sending a letter home to parents to inform them of these meetings.

On Tuesday 17th May the children who are receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation had morning tea with their prayer partners. This is a lovely way of involving our parishioners and working together as a Catholic community.  A big thank you to Mrs Jocelyn Marsh and Mrs Adrienne Wylie who supplied the morning tea for our Prayer Partners.
Here are some lovely photos of the children with their prayer partners.

Take Care and God Bless
Ann Dooley/Co. DRS (Director of Religious Studies)
